Blog Post #2 Shitty First Drafts
In “Shitty First Drafts” a selection taken from Anne Lamotts novel Bird by Bird Lamott examines her ideas on how authors of all sorts should indulge in very shitty first drafts before creating a better revised second draft then a terrific third draft. She likens writing to getting teeth pulled and with that very vivid image in your head you see the position Lamott takes. The unease and uncomfortable tendencies of trying to write and not being able to and offers a possible solution with her idea of child drafts letting the imagination of the author run free uninhibited and later providing a more focused lens on the work.
Throughout the piece I couldn't help but agree constantly with what Anne was saying she was making great points but even here in writing this blog response I couldn't help but not take any of her advice. Why is writing so uncomfortable and I think it has to do with the fear of wanting to impress and making sure what you're writing is accurate. It's a fear of failure but one needs to accept that fear as a possibility to move on. “Do or do not, there is no try” a quote from Yoda where he is trying to say how do you do something without trying to first. That is what Anne Lamott is trying to explore, you must work past the fear of failure and try let all the unfocused thought make it onto paper and as long as all the ideas are there you can focus them and sort through them making the process a whole lot easier.
